The Fried Twinkie Effect

There are few things in life more difficult than trying to get back into a fitness routine after a period of gluttony. Whether it is a weekend bender or a fast food marathon, how do you snap out of it and get back on track?

Hungry For Adventure: Dining Downtown San Diego

Last week I told you some places to check out if you are in the northern county of San Diego (Guide to Encinitas). Today, I’ll let you in on some hot spots downtown!

Breakfast: Hash House a Go Go, Hillcrest.

I’m not typically a breakfast person, however, this place has changed my opinion on the most important meal of the day. The portion sizes are gigantic! So, if you’re a first timer, you may want to share with a friend. Must try: their crispy potatoes! They have great daily mimosa specials– the grapefruit was my personal favorite.

Lunch: Baja Beach Cafe, Pacific Beach.

Fish tacos & huge margaritas… what can be better than that?! I’ll tell you what– a phenomenal patio with great reggae music, and a view of the beach and beautiful people walking and riding their bikes along the boardwalk.

Happy Hour: Wave House Beach Club, Mission Beach.

The atmosphere of this beachfront outdoor bar makes it a must-see if you are in the area– especially around sunset! Enjoy discounted beers around the fire pit. There is even a wave machine that you can ride!

Dinner: Bandar, Gaslamp District.

I love expanding my palate and trying foods I’ve never had before. Bandar is a cute Persian spot, with outdoor seating, and great food that will make you want to break out into a belly dance. Order the mast-o-khiar (yogurt with cucumber) as an appetizer, and be sure to save it to mix with your meal!

Dessert: Clayton’s Coffee Shop, Coronado.

This cute, old-fashion cafe makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time, with their juke box and retro decor. Their delicious menu of ice cream cakes and home made pies is irresistible!

Hungry for Adventure! Where to eat in San Francisco.

As a foodie, San Francisco was my mecca. With endless possibilities of delicious dining, two weeks just wasn’t enough to try it all! Here is what I came up with as my top spots of Frisco dining!

Breakfast, The Most Important Meal of the Day

Coffee: It’s a Grind (Polk St.)

For all of my Weeds fans out there, you must get an iced coffee at It’s a Grind, in honor of the one and only Nancy Botwin!

Donuts: Dynamo Donut (Mission District)

This little hole in the wall stole my heart. Each day, they post their daily donuts on a wooden board.. they have everything from maple glazed bacon apple, to I am not a Gluten chocolate with raspberry glaze. You will become a donut addict in no time!

Brunch (featuring bottomless mimosas)

Breakfast Tacos: Luna Park (Valencia St.)

This place is very cozy! With cute little booths in the back, if you’re looking for a more intimate experience. The food is delicious and the drinks are strong. What more can you ask for in a brunch?

Delicious Peruvian Food: Fresca (Noe Valley)

Eggs in lobster sauce, with a side order of bottomless mimosas…. game over.

It’s not NY Pizza, but it will do…

Silver Pizzeria

(Downtown Berkeley)
This cool little spot near UC Berkeley makes one type of pizza and salad each day. Really cool concept, and, there is a bar inside.

Venice Pizzeria

(Sausalito)
Pizza with a view! After biking the Golden Gate into the town of Sausalito, take a break, get a slice and a glass of wine, and sit and watch the boats go by.

hAPPy Hour: Apps & Drinks

Muscles: Eagle Cafe

(pier 39)
I consider myself to be a muscle connoisseur, and these were, by far, the best muscles I’ve ever had in my life. They were humungous!! The view could not be more beautiful… definitely a place to check out if you like seafood.

Sushi: Hana Zen

(pier 39)
I’ve never had a California roll tempura style before this. The crab tasted so fresh! Plus, you can’t put a price tag on the view.

Spicy Margaritas: Tres

(across from AT&T Park)
Jalapeño margaritas are in contention for my favorite alcoholic beverage, and the ones at Tres have won their way into my heart. This is a cool spot to watch the game— they have a huge projector screen in the back, and tents in the yard that are great for mingling with other fans.

The Fastest of Foods

In & Out

… duh. don’t forget to get it animal style!

Sup? Supper..

Burritos, Tacos & Quesadillas, oh my!: Mission District (

walk down 24th st.)
If you’re looking to try the best Mexican food, come to the Mission. Anywhere you go will be delicious. The quesadillas are the size of your average burrito… so you can imagine what that means for their burritos.

Persian Food: Lavish (Hayes Valley)

The decor of this place reminded me of my room back at home.. so cozy! I was recommended to try the The The Bademjan… and now I am passing this recommendation on to you!

After Hours: Dessert & Drinks

Ice Cream: Ghirardelli Square

This needs no explanation. Go stuff your face.

Irish Coffee: Buena Vista (Fisherman’s Warf)

This Irish Coffee is world famous! It is the perfect night cap after a long day of exploring the city.

An Ode to a Donut

Poems are a powerful way to express how you feel

My subject this week is a love that’s very real.

The donut. A delectable pastry.

I’ll try to put into words how much you mean to me.

Sugary sweet, best when served warm,

All other desserts have been outperformed.

Dunkin & Krispy Kreme barely scratch the surface.

There’s a whole world of donuts out there that you could miss!

Peanut Butter Banana Honey— that’s the one that changed my life.

But, the the goal of staying fit… you see, that is the strife.

Now, I suppose I should go for a run,

Or, just head back to the cafe, and get another one.

Strawberry Brownie Cupcakes

  • Brownie mix (eggs, oil, etc.)
  • Strawberry cake mix (eggs, oil, etc.)
  • Fresh Strawberries
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Sprinkles
  • Cream Cheese Icing

Line the bottom of the cupcake tray with brownie mix. Add the strawberry cake mix on top & bake!

Topped with cream cheese icing, chocolate chips, sprinkles & a fresh strawberry!

Breakfast Pizza!

  • pizza dough
  • mozzarella
  • eggs
  • toppings of your choice! (I used spinach, broccoli, peppers, fresh salsa & hot sauce on this one.

Prepare your eggs, then bake on top of the pizza dough. So easy, and so much more fun than an omelet!

 Hot Apple Pie Hummus

  • Chick peas
  • Apples
  • Vanilla Greek Yogurt
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Optional: Nuts, Peanut butter, Craisins, Granola, Almond Milk

Peel & Cut the apples and place on a baking tray.

Mix greek yogurt, cinnamon, a pinch of sugar and a little bit of melted butter, and pour over the apples.

Bake at 350 for 30 – 45 minutes.

Blend the apples with chick peas, and eat with fresh apple slices!

Optional- blend almonds, walnuts, craisins, granola, almond milk and sunflower seed peanut butter. Place in the middle of your hummus… yum!
